The Pelletizing Workflow: From Raw Biomass to High-Density Fuel
Manufacturing renewable heating pellets or paper granules requires precision mechanics to bind loose waste into solid fuel. Here is a general overview of the industrial extrusion process.
1. Raw Material Preparation
Before pelletizing, raw biomass (wood chips, sawdust, or paper waste) must be conditioned. The material is first ground down in a hammer mill to a uniform powder. It is then passed through a rotary dryer to achieve the optimal moisture content (typically between 10% and 15%), ensuring the pellets will bind correctly without crumbling.
2. The Extrusion Process
The prepared material is fed into the pellet mill's conditioning chamber. High-pressure rollers force the material through a metal die matrix (either flat or ring die). The immense friction generates heat, releasing natural lignins in wood—or acting on the fibers in paper—to fuse the material into dense, solid pellets as they are extruded through the holes.
3. Cooling and Packaging
The freshly extruded pellets exit the machine extremely hot and fragile. They are immediately transported to a counter-flow cooler, where ambient air hardens them. Finally, the cooled pellets are sifted to remove excess dust before being routed to a bagging machine, where they are packaged into 15kg retail bags or large bulk sacks.
